08/11/2025 Ullock Pike & Carl Side

This should also have included Long Side but despite putting up a tarp for shelter things got a soaking on Ullock Pike by that heavy but fine rain that seems to get everywhere and wet everything very quickly .

I didn’t even get the hand held out as we crossed Long Side as despite efforts to keep stuff dry my log sheets were nearly pulp and I wasn’t for putting the shelter back up after the short walk , so we pressed on to Carl Side where I put the shelter up again .

Looked like the weather would be as forecast on the ascent , cloudy and brightening up with some sun as the morning went on , but as always we hoped for the best and prepared for the worst .

Bowness Bay & Wood , illuminated through breaks in the cloud.

The view towards Keswick from Carl Side .

As we approach White Stones on the way down , we looked back to see the summits we’d been on clearing nicely . It’s all a matter of timing . At least it was mild for the time of year . I managed I think to work anyone that called on both summits , though admittedly I did only put out two last calls today , which might surprise Reg ?

Yes Richard i’m surprised only 2 last calls and not last last last last call

I had similar conditions on Ard Crags and Knott Riggs. On the summit i put up my bivvy shelter to keep out of the rain and wind, but you then have to put it away wet and was not worthwhile getting it back out on the second summit . It left a puddle in the bottom of my rucksack the took days to dry.

Lessons learned carry a plastic bag to put it when wet

I like the moody photos Annis has a eye for a good picture

The tarp’ I put up has it’s own bag but it’s nylon and not really waterproof but I carry it outside the rucksack any way .

Spent many an hour out fishing in boats on the lakes , and despite your best efforts everything gets soggy sooner or later when the rain persists .
