We crossed the beck below Spout Force , where we stopped a while to watch the antics of a dipper , before turning right and heading up the steep climb by the wall. to the Wainwright summit of Graystones , and then on to Broom Fell .
Depending on the weather , possibly the last outing of the year , and there were not many people on the air, but, I was having trouble with the Northern fells QRM which meant I switched to the Yaesu 65 from the Anytone which seems much less immune , it was comfortable enough up there , and it was a chance for a brief catch up with half a dozen or so regulars , and a couple of people I’d not heard for a while . Some great light for photos too.
Looks fantastic Mark . Would have been good to get a S2S on HF . I suspect you didn’t have to negotiate any bogs on the way down from those ones like we did yesterday ?
Weather looks a bit dire over the next week here , only Tuesday looks OK (up to now).
The ex-volcanoes can be a bit tricky as the rock is like glass. Yesterday was attempting to avoid the rain with high winds and muddy slopes so maybe not so far off!
Annis was brave wanting to go up Graystones from Spout Force I have only done it once and never again, it’s bad enough coming down. It was good to get both summits despite the problems we both had, my ft3d putting out a carrier and no audio and your QRM
I some times wonder if the pulsing nose is over the horizon radar or terrain following radar from the fast jets, or just anomaly to these Northern Fells.
It’s a mystery that Reg , Mike , you may have heard when you signed off confirmed he was getting carrier and none or very low audio from you yet it came back to normal without you altering anything?
I wonder if conditions on the day affect how we remember the difficulty of the climbs ? I remember struggling up Illgill Head one very warm day from the Wasdale head end , but we did it from the SW end up Great Hall Gill on a frosty day in January this year which is shorter but steeper and it din’t seem as bad .
