Reg and I got about ten in the logbook for this activation which involved an interesting walk up from Yew Tree Tarn through the deciduous woodland then via Tarn Hows then NE to the summit . The weather was overcast with high cloud but a great temperature for walking with no threat of rain . We arrived a little late , but had more contacts than we had really expected for the location and mid week .
We just managed to work Steve before we lost him, who was mobile down in the Wigan area managing to get as far as Huddersfield to work the special VE day call sign . John in Chorley who Reg and I went up Dent Fell with a few weeks ago when he was in the area was a very good signal .
I put the beam together and pointed it NW to see if we could get Derek and he answered first shout which was a bit of a surprise , Reg could also manage to work him on his gear too . we were also getting good signals in and out of the Lockerbie and North of Carlisle to Peter and Chris also Ken North of Penrith . Reg may also have some pictures to add ?

I’ve been up Black Fell in the evening a few times over the years - it is worth noting it is also a HEMA. I remember one conversation on HF with a pilot from Maderia just after COVID - he was telling me about the terrible impact it had on pilots, many having to resort to taxi driving to make a living without knowing whether they were going to be re-employed again. When I was growing up I really wanted to be a pilot, but with a lack of focus I fell into computing and then it was too late. It’s not an easy career path at the best of times, however!
I’ve also had an interest in planes ,Mark . nearest I got to flying one was a glider trip off Sutton Bank which my Wife got for my 50th . I did actually take the stick briefly but that was it.
I’ve often fancied a go at paragliding as well , but I suppose at least living here we still have the opportunity to view the world from 3,000 ft !
