I know that we were spoiled with fine weather this day, but Mo and I had a fab time on Gummerâs How. We were probably a wee bit over cautious about the cows, but Mo had recently read a news article about a Scottish hill walker who was trampled by cows with calves, so better to be safe than sorry.
Youâre always better safe than sorry when it comes to cows, especially when they have calves, although I believe most issues are when there is a dog involved. I know of one local farmer who had experienced an issue with his cows, so it is very real.
Glad you had a great time, I did find your video pop up on YouTube, so reaching the right audience, and sorry for waffling on.
I hope youâll be back soon!
Mark.
Oh, and my family joke about my calls CQ SOTA WOTA, in theory it should be CQ SOTA WOTA POTA, and if you visit Whitbarrow Scar you can even do CQ SOTA WOTA POTA WWFF!
Nice video Fraser. Gummers How is one of my local SOTAs so I usually activate it 2 or 3 times a year. I recognise all of your 2m FM chasers.
Youâre right to be cautious about the cattle if youâve not been there before. But in fact they are used to a steady stream of tourists as well as locals and are docile. As elsewhere I avoid getting between calves and mothers. I put my dog on the lead and make only a small diversion if they are standing on the path. What annoys me is, you sometimes see tourists going off the path trying to approach them, to pet them or even worse, stand their kids in front of them for a photograph.
BTW: any SOTA activators doing WOTAs, be aware that you can upload the same ADIF log file to the WOTA website that you upload to the SOTA website. Create an account with your callsign and thereafter for any SOTA-WOTA summits click on WOTA DATA to upload your log and as well as do other stuff there.
Next visit will be to the G/NP summit weekend. Wrong side of the M6 for you? Like when I lived in London, where the cabbies would say, âSorry mate, I donât go south of the riverâ.
No, I donât go in for these artificial boundaries. As a teenager I was a fan of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones despite media retrospectives claiming that you were one or the other. So, I regularly activate summits in the Pennines (7 so far this year). Plenty more G/NP and G/SP summits on my shortlist.
As Iâve written on the SOTA reflector, I usually get more 2m FM and SSB chasers there than here in Cumbria, which I think is because youâre in easy range of more cities and large towns.
