November Skyscapes

Some nice photos my Wife took on yesterday’s activations on Knott and Great Sca Fell.
A nice change from the monotone grey sky we seem to have had for about a fortnight and the weather was as it should have been in June this year . Being dressed for November, though there was 0 wind and it got uncomfortably warm in that shelter just ended up wearing base layers . One chap appeared by the cairn on Gt Sca Fell stripped to the waist (from the top) .

Mackerel skies ,

… and mares tails , make lofty ships carry low sails .

Hi Richard it was good to get you on hf with 5 watts from the G106 it was a good test after my failure on Binsey i also got John Gi4osf/p on GI/AH-007 after you so at least i know it works

I just need to get my backside in to gear on a hill now

Yes a nice walk as well Reg . John’s summit was GI/AH-007 “Slemish”
Emailed you some pictures taken fishing at dawn this morning .
This one’s of fells many will have activated . If I’m not mistaken Whiteside, Grasmoor , Possibly Whiteless Pike and Robinson in the back ground and Melbreak with the sun about to burst over the summit ? Nice to see the ever changing landscape and weather we have here from all the different viewpoints and times of year .

Hi Richard,

What stunning photos of the cloud formations! As a keen photography myself i am very impressed! These are fells i would like to do again but with excellent visibility!

Thanks for contacts on 2m and 40m. I also worked John on GI/AH-007 on 40m to from the car.

Hello again Geoff.
Great to get most of our regular contacts on both 40M and 2M . I was just using that little matchbox size cheapo SJ cam I had when we were on Binsey . Not the same as the SLR but the scenery and atmospheric conditions on days like those mean good shots guaranteed from any camera .
It was nice to get John on a S2S as well . Worked him for the first time when I was on Harter fell earlier in the year from his shack on 2M and 4M
Richard.

I heard you fairly well in Pickering IO94of Richard when you were on Knott chatting to a station in Darlington. Unfortunately when that QSO finished you had faded out. I feel sure that a few minutes earlier we could have had a QSO no problem! Not to worry, that’s what radio is all about.

That would have been a great contact into Pickering Phil .
Yes I was talking to Dave G0PMJ in Darlington , I’ve regularly talked to him over the last year or two when we pull over off the A66 near Scotch corner when out that way , he has a good path to certain fells over here too .
Richard

Yes, I hear Dave regularly on 2m FM, thanks for reminding me of his call. During the Lakeland weekend in 2022 I think it was, I went on to a high site on Black Hambleton north of Thirsk good for VHF to the west to chase all the guys I could hear in the Lakes. It was then when I last worked him.

Phil,
We’re over in North Yorks quite often I was up Sutton Bank near the gliding club a couple of weeks ago with the 2m gear , it’s a good place to operate from .
Richard.

Talking of familiar chasers, I hadn’t heard Sue on my last few activations, although Douggie remains a regular for the more Southerly fells. I messaged Douggie and the good news is she is fine, the bad news is that she has moved to a new location and unfortunately can only use an indoor antenna.

I was planning on checking in to her C4FM net that she holds at 7.30pm Tuesday on the NWFG reflector, but having not used my access point in quite some time found that I have re-purposed the Raspberry Pi to be a Ham Clock, which I’d also forgotten about!

I’m planning on getting my IC-705 connected up and available via Wifi and wfview (I have dabbled with it previously, and my IC-705 is all setup so it shouldn’t be difficult) so I can hopefully provide a more consistent chasing experience. I’ve got arthritis in my neck which causes lots of issues over the winter - especially with working at a computer - so when it’s bad I minimize using the standing desk and code horizontally. Unfortunately that means I’m downstairs and away from the radio, but this setup should allow me to access it wherever I am in the house.

As a kind of celebration I’ve just logged my 10,000th portable QSO on qrz.com!

I posted a quick report of my activation of Loughrigg on Sunday on the SOTA reflector: First snow in the Lake District this year? - Activation Reports - SOTA Reflector - thanks to Geoff GM4WHA as always for being such a dedicated chaser!

Cheers, Mark.

I spoke to Sue from Helm Cragg at the start of this month , Mark , and she mentioned that she had moved location, and has definitely been noticeable by her absence recently .
10 000 contacts is a good milesone for the /P contacts . Loughrigg is a nice fell to operate from, too. I was up there in Spring for the first time , and the lower parts round Grasmere were a carpet of bluebells.

I chased David M0JKS/P who was on Loughrigg this afternoon using my IC-705 remotely via the wfview software installed on my laptop and it worked flawlessly, so that is definitely a setup I will keep running moving forward.

I don’t have any of that hi-tech stuff. Is there a local C4FM repeater that one can call into the net via?

All being well should be on G/LD / LDW-004 tomorrow Andy . 2M. Might be on for a s2s if the times fall right ?
Richard.

Hi Richard, I saw your alert for 1030 tomorrow. My wife, dogs and I are walking to Carron Crag (LDO-070) in Grizedale forest tomorrow hoping to arrive on summit around 1100 but it could be a bit earlier or later.

Andy.
I arrived on summit about 10:45 today and closed down about 11:40 just missed you I saw you were spotted by Dave at 11:51 .
Trust that you had a good day out , got clagged in just as I started the activation but we got a few nice photos just before it did.
Richard.
