Place Fell 17.11.2025

Great day for a walk up one of the fells I’d been wanting to revisit after doing it once before a couple of years or more ago . I also thought it was one Mrs XGO would like and she was not disappointed.

From Patterdale , we crossed the Goldrill Beck and took the traverse path to the ascent up the South side of Place fell where it was sheltered from the icy breeze and the warmth of the sun could be felt . That icy wind dropped right off shortly after setting up at the top .

There did not really seem to be that many people on air yesterday , but ended up with a dozen contacts in all . I was set up for 2m , 70cm and 4m , and always work them in that order as I use the same antennas and radio for 2&70 then get the 4m gear out to finish off , I expect to be busiest on 2m and most of the 4m contacts are usually ones I’ve worked on the other bands any way . There were no takers at all on 4m yesterday , not even Derek , Reg or Dave G6LKB . From reading Mark’s report Reg was about but suspect Place Fell is not on a particularly good path ?

Had two on 70cms . I worked Geoff G4WHA/A on both 2 & 70 and we christened Lee’s (M5LEE) new radio on VHF and UHF bands .

I was very pleased to get Mark M5TEA/P who was on High Rigg , and also Jake M0PVC/P on Scafell Pike .

Winter 2025 arrives on the summits, water frozen solid and the boggy bits which is an advantage

Summit in sight …

I got a cheap but very waterproof lightweight tarp , I dispensed with two of the metal poles it arrived with as they add a bit of weight, in favour of replacing them by making the walking poles dual purpose . . it was surprisingly sturdy .

A wonderful summit. A few years ago I had similar conditions (although a bit warmer) whilst there was a contest on and managed to work some rare US callsigns starting at the top of the 20m band and ending at the bottom.

It’s a very distinctive trig point/benchmark location too.

Cheers for the S2S. Mark.

It is an interesting summit with nice views Mark.

The trig point and rocks it’s built on remind me of a place in Britany we once visited when touring on the motorcycle years ago . Mont St Michael a small town built on an rocky island , it had a tall church spire right on top and a causeway out to the island .

The last couple of times we did High Rigg we took the longer route from the South over Wren Crag returning via the low route which follows the beck through the valley .

Bit of a contrast from the Ullock Pike adventure last week Reg !

I notice from the Bass lake web cam that the fells have a nice snow covering down to the base on Ullock Pike , and Long side by the look of it .
