Seatallan LD-025. Sat 18th Oct 2025.

After speaking with Richard M8XGO (Formally 2E0XGO) we arranged to do Seatallan LD-025/LDW-093 for the LD weekend. Our original plan was to start with Buckbarrow LDW-197 then go over to Seatallan and possibly do Middle Fell LDW-135 and HLD-038 for HEMA. However we were unable to park for the start of the walk for Buckbarrow and instead parked at Greendale so we did Middle fell first.

Wasdale is a long drive from my home QTH of Annan, taking about 2 hours to drive there. After setting off at 0635hrs local I arrived at Greendale at about 0835hrs local. Richard arrived more or less at the same time. As I was driving towards the parking area I had a chat with Matthew on Seatallan from the car.

We set off walking at 0855hrs local and walked 1.39 miles to the summit of Middle Fell arriving at 1021hrs local. It is a steady climb steepish in places. After taking a few photos and video we setup operating and worked 8 stations in total.

We left the summit at 1107hrs local and made the descent to the col between Middle fell and Seatallan. The bottom is usually very boggy when I have watched other peoples video of the route but today it felt like walking on a marshmallow which was a very good description by Richard!

The ascent up to the summit of Seatallan vas steep and the last bit was very steep! We arrived on the summit at 1209hrs local where Matthew ran over to meet us both! Just as well as my legs would not have been in any fit state for running after the brutal climb!

It was great to meet Matthew in person as I have had a lot of QSO’s with him including a lot from home when he has been camping on Seatallan. His station was very impressive on the summit!

In about 1 hour of operating I made 18 contacts including 1 on 23cms to a station near Bolton which was a distance of about 71 miles. He was running 10 watts into a vertical and I was running 1 watt on my Alinco with its rubber duck so I was very pleased with that. Because it was so windy I struggles to keep my roach pole and eventually it broke at the bottom so I used Richards setup for the last few QSO’s.

On the summit it was very windy and very cold and after operating for about an hour we were very cold so packed up and moved on at about 1340hrs local. The descent down to Cat Bields was very easy as it is all downhill on a nice grassy surface. It was there we said goodbye to Matthew and we continued onto Buckbarrow LDW-197 via Glade How. We arrived at the summit at about 1420hrs local.

It was very easy to see how hard it is to get out on VHF from there. We made contact with Matthew M0MZB who was bicycle mobile. After a few more calls we set off back to the car.

We made our way over Broad crag and descended back to Greendale via Greendale Ghyll. It is a very steep descent! We arrived back at the car at 1516hrs local.

It was an excellent walk with excellent company. Many thanks to Richard M8XGO.

I started my Garmin watch to track my route when we started in the morning and according to the analytics we walked 6.20 miles.

Many thanks to all chasers and especially Richard for accompanying me.

It was a great walk Geoff !
As you said it was also really good to meet up with Matthew . Having only once met him myself , in person briefly a couple of years ago . We were also fortunate to get him /M as he was cycling home , effectively qualifying Buckbarrow for us . Having decided not to put the antenna mast up and take our chances , it’s debatable whether we’d have got anyone else from that location on the hand held ? It is difficult at the best of times .
It was however a different world wind and temperature wise down there , compared to Seatallan summit.
I’ve put some of the pictures I took below .

I wonder if Geoff remembers this effort to make contact with Sue G1OHH.

Hi Derek,

I remember that well! It was on Clough Head on the 28th August 2011 and it was so windy! We made the contact though!!! The things we did to make a contact.
