This week I’ve managed to get out in my lunch hours and activate three of my local Wainwrights with some good contacts as detailed below:

Until we get the upload of GPS tracks integrated into WOTA mapping I had to look around for a 3rd party solution - I found wikiloc does the job - here is a map of my track after I turned the FT1XD on and the GPS subsequently kicked in (you can see the dynamic version on wikiloc as well):
Of particular interest this week is my contact with Don GD0BFN from Grandsire who heard me calling on the FT1XD with the now essential Diamond RH-770 telescopic whip. He was coming through 53 my signal report at 55. As it transpired I’d actually met Don on my last visit to the Isle of Man - I’d taken the bus down to Ballasalla to visit Wednesday nights club night for IOMARS.
Look at the propagation map for that VHF handheld contact, generated by the excellent SOTA Mapping profile tool:
That’s a 60 mile contact with a lot of hills in the way (I’m on the left)!
A nice week of quick activation’s, thanks for all the dedicated chasing. Some photos from School Knott (Hag End) today. I didn’t attempt to cross the wall and barbed wire fence, I think as mentioned on Flickr it is private land and the summit itself is only about a metre higher than the ground on the other side of the wall. A Northern Ireland station MI0RRE could be heard 51 which Sue G1OHH worked successfully, but whilst he was coming through to me at 51 he could only just make out a signal above the noise, so couldn’t work me. Some interesting conditions on VHF recently.
