Whitfell 13/03/2025

This walk also included Burnmoor, Buckbarrow , and Kinmont , I’ve never done any of these four fells before , It was one of the most pleasant walks we’ve done and the route we took was a very gradual ascent , soft going and surprisingly dry underfoot what looked like the occasional boggy areas were more moist than anything and the weather was great . Each of the summits had their own individual character . A damn site warmer up there and less windy than the previous day doing a local coastal bunker on 40m .
I had moved onto Burnmoor when I worked Tim G4YTD qualifying for his Goat award on Helvellyn who reported the conditions were not so Spring like at 3000ft+.
I had a busy day with contacts on 2m , on all the summits thanking everyone for the support .
It was a good day for photos as well .

Setting up on Burnmoor with Whitfell on the horizon .

Buck Barrow

Interesting diamond shaped rock details in the centre ground
( I think Phil M0AYB has an interest in geology , he might know what causes this type of feature ? )

When I saw this picture I was reminded of that WW2 Marines on Iwo Jima statue

Looking from , I Kinmont think that’s Seatallan illuminated bt the Afternoon sun ?

Heading down , and looking North

Looking South toward Black Combe

Hi Richard,

What excellent photos. I presume you started from the Corney fell road. Is the whole road now open because i understood it was closed at a certain point,

The views looked great on the walk.

It was a very nice walk Geoff, the bridge is out , in fact it’s not there and it doesn’t look like a work in progress either , think it’s been shut a couple of years there’s some Heras fencing across the road at that point and it’s access only up to there so there’s no through traffic and that’s as far as you can go from either direction . There is a road side parking spot just before it .
I managed to work Reg on Whitfell and one or two of the others , which he said he’d never been able to get from home before , but he had used his beam , said he couldn’t hear me on the vertical antenna .
Richard.

Annis just keeps getting better with the photos i like the dramatic sky and for me the one i like best is number 11 the wall leads the eye up to the summit
And of course the contacts where a surprise they are all one’s i normally can’t get from home.
Pointing the beam in your general direction worked well

Yes the pictures came out well I have to say, as much as I can’t be bothered with phones the camera on that one takes good photos . It’s as if there is a polarising filter on them as well .
I also worked John G8NNL who came on the Dent activation with us . he was at home near Chorley good signal as well .
Richard.

Hi Richard, Thanks for putting these WOTAs on - I was pleased to chase you from Liverpool, as I often can’t get many activators on 2m, as I am down at sea level here.

Great pictures and I hope to chase you again soon.

Thanks for the contacts Simon look forward to hearing you on the air again soon . I’m out tomorrow with Reg 2E0LDF on Lingmoor Fell on 2m. I think that one might be a bit more difficult because of it’s surrounding neighbours , but I’ve never been before and the forecast looks OK .
Richard.
